WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Fresh off the heels of one its most impressive victories under head coach Keylor Chan, Northwestern topped itself with its most dominating victory since the advent of rally scoring, sweeping Iona Saturday morning at the Georgetown Classic, 30-23, 30-9, 30-11.
The Wildcats held Iona to 43 total points, the lowest point total by an opponent since rally scoring began in 2001. Northwestern held host Georgetown to 46 total points Friday night, which had been its best defensive effort since 2003.
The Wildcats also limited the Gaels to nine points in game two, the first time NU has held an opponent to single-digits in a 30-point game since rally scoring began seven seasons ago.
Overall, Northwestern hit .391 as a team while holding Iona to a -.032 hitting percentage, the second time this year NU has held an opponent to a negative hitting percentage.
Game one easily was the closest of the three, with Iona using its first timeout after the Wildcats got kills from Lindsay Anderson (Wilmette, Ill./New Trier) and Chelsy Hyser (Belvidere, Ill./Belvidere) to open an 11-6 lead. Northwestern made that advantage 10, 24-14, after three-straight kills from Hyser, Anderson and Courtnie Paulus (Belgium, Wis./Ozaukee), then cruised to a 30-23 game one victory.
Game two was, simply put, Wildcat dominance. With the score tied, 2-2, Northwestern went on a 10-0 run featuring three aces from Paulus. After Iona scored a point, the Wildcats then reeled off the next seven points to extend the run to 17-1 and take a 19-3 lead. Iona scored the next two points, but Naomi Johnson (Bloomington, Minn./Kennedy) notched a kill then presided over an 8-0 run in what eventually became a 30-9 NU win.
Game three was closer at the beginning, but with the score 9-5 in favor of the 'Cats, Northwestern took off on a 21-6 run to finish the game, 30-11, and the match, 3-0.
Every Wildcat on the roster saw playing time in the match, with Hyser leading a balanced attack with eight kills and a .545 hitting percentage (8-2-11). Both Paulus and Anderson had four aces for NU, while Glab finished with 14 assists in one game played and Stephanie Jurivich (LaGrange, Ill./St. Ignatius) had 18 in the final two.
Sophomore Kate Nobilio (Johnsburg, Ill./Johnsburg) averaged 6.3 digs per game for a match-high 19.
Northwestern returns to action at 6 p.m. tonight against Towson in its final match of the Georgetown Classic.
