STATE COLLEGE, Pa. -- Led by junior Jennifer Hong (Windermere, Fla./The First Academy), Northwestern started its 2007-08 season with a fifth-place finish at the Lady Northern Invitational.
The Lady Northern, which was held at Penn State's Blue Course this weekend, is always played at the site of next spring's Big Ten Championships. Every Big Ten team, with the exception of Purdue, competed in this year's event. Among Big Ten programs, the Wildcats were fourth among the 10 teams.
Kent State captured the Lady Northern title with a 14-over 878. The Wildcats dropped a spot on the final day, posting a 45-over 909 (307-299-303) to finish fifth, behind KSU, Michigan State, Indiana and Ohio State.
Hong carded a 3-over 219 (73-74-72) to finish in a fourth-place tie with Iowa's Tyrette Metzendorf. Freshman Kelsey Lindenschmidt (West Chester, Ohio/Ursuline Academy), one of two freshmen playing for the 'Cats this year, placed 18th in her collegiate-opening event with a 13-over 229 (78-74-77).
Senior Brittany Johnston (Akron, Ohio/Walsh Jesuit) closed the 54-hole tournament with a 7-over 79 on Sunday and placed 22nd at 15-over (75-77-79=231).
The Wildcats return to action Oct. 19-21 at the Lady Paladin in Greenville, S.C.
