EVANSTON, Ill. -- After 60 minutes of scoreless soccer that saw multiple chances for each team, Wright State scored the game's lone goal to top the Wildcats Sunday, 1-0. Junior Jenny Dunn (Pacific Palisades, Calif./Louisville) led NU with six shots.
With the loss, Northwestern falls to 5-2-2 on the year and has its unbeaten streak snapped at six. Wright State improves to 7-2-0 on the season. Sunday's game was played under perfect conditions at NU's new Lakeside Field.
Wright State controlled the action during the early stages of the first half, but Dunn tried to supply the NU offense. The forward had a shot blocked in the sixth minute and forced a save by the Raider keeper in the 14th minute.
It appeared the Wildcats would break through in the closing minutes of the first frame when they launched a flurry of shots on the Wright State goal. Senior Caitlin Carr (Cordova, Tenn./St. Mary's) had a shot blocked in the box and senior Shannon Schneeman's (St. Paul, Minn./Cretin-Derham Hall) rebound attempt was blocked by the defense as well.
Carr and Junior Laura Janowitsch (Grafton, Wis./Grafton) both had looks in the 44th minute, but the first half ended scoreless.
Wright State scored the game-winner at 60:51 when Amber Kasmer got behind the Wildcat defense and had a breakaway attempt on senior Lauren Johnston (Denver, Colo./Denver East). Kasmer did not miss and gave Wright State the 1-0 lead.
NU pressed to get the equalizer, but the Raider defense held for the 1-0 victory.
The Wildcats amassed 17 shots and seven on goal. Dunn led the way with six shots and Schneeman registered four.
NU opens the Big Ten schedule next weekend when it travels to Indiana and Purdue. The Wildcats had their unbeaten streak snapped at six games.
