EVANSTON, Ill. - A total of five current or former Wildcats were among the 24 players named to the 2007-08 United States Elite women's lacrosse team following a three-day tryout at the University of Maryland-Baltimore County coordinated by US Lacrosse. A total of 98 players competed in the tryout.
Named to the 24-player Elite team from Northwestern is current Wildcat Meredith Frank, two-time Tewaaraton Trophy winner Kristen Kjellman ('07), Sarah Albrecht ('06) and current assistant coaches Acacia Walker (Maryland '05) and Lindsey Munday ('06). Frank is one of three current college players selected to the Elite Team.
Frank was a first-team IWLCA and Inside Lacrosse All-American and a first-team All-ALC selection this past year after finishing second on the team with 61 goals -- tied for fifth on NU's single-season list. She has a total of 93 goals in her first two seasons and was the 2006 ALC Rookie of the Year.
Kjellman recently closed out her career with her second-straight Tewaaraton Trophy and third-straight Honda Sports Award. She is the only four-year All-America choice (three-time first-team selection) in the school's history and was a three-time ALC Player of the Year. Kjellman owns the all-time NU record for goals (250) and points (349) -- both good for sixth on the NCAA all-time annals -- and is second on the school's list with 99 career assists. She set the all-time NCAA record with 39 career goals in NCAA Championship play and holds the NCAA all-time record with 268 career draw controls and a 3.29 draw controls per game average.
Munday helped the Wildcats to the 2005 and '06 national championships and still holds the Northwestern career record with 128 career assists and is third with 268 points. She is a two-time first-team All-American and a four-time All-ALC selection.
Albrecht, currently an assistant coach at UMass under former Wildcat assistant Alexis Venechanos, also was part of the '05 and '06 national title teams. A 2006 First-Team All-American, Albrecht was best known for her clutch performances in the postseason. She was named to the NCAA Championship All-Tournament teams in '05 and '06, scoring the game-winner in the memorable overtime win over top-seeded Duke in the 2006 NCAA semifinals in her hometown of Boston.
Walker, who will begin her third season as an assistant, was a 2005 First-Team All-American at Maryland and a two-time All-Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) honoree in helping the Terps to NCAA appearances all four years, including an 18-4 mark and a trip to the NCAA semifinals in 2003.
The next activity for the U.S. teams will be the Stars & Stripes Weekend in October. The event is slated to be held in Portland, Ore., and will feature competition against the University of California, the University of Oregon and Stanford University. Further details will be announced in the near future.
