WASHINGTON, D.C. -- For the second-straight year, Northwestern's Kristen Kjellman (Westwood, Mass./Westwood) took home the Tewaaraton Trophy as the top female collegiate lacrosse player in the country. The award was presented to her Wednesday night by The Tewaaraton Award Foundation at the National Geographic Society in Washington, D.C.
Last year Kjellman became the first player, male or female, to win the award from a non-East Coast school. This year she became the first player, male or female, to win the award in consecutive years and is the first female to win the award twice. (Michael Powell of Syracuse won the award in 2002 and 2004).
Kjellman recently capped off an illustrious career with her third-straight national championship as the Wildcats defeated Virginia 15-13, helping the Northwestern become just the second team in NCAA history to win three-straight titles. A four-time All-America choice and a three-time first-team selection, she led the nation's top scoring team this year with 66 goals to complement 24 assists (90 points) and was the only player in the country with at least 60 goals and 80 draw controls. She was named the American Lacrosse Conference's (ALC) Player of the Year for the third-straight season and was a first team all-conference choice for the fourth year in a row.
Kjellman helped the Wildcats set NCAA single-season records this year with 529 points, 361 goals, 168 assists and a 16.4 goals-per game average. She owns the Northwestern all-time record for goals (250) and points (349) and set an NCAA all-time record with 268 draw controls and a career 3.29 draw controls per game average. Kjellman also owns the NCAA all-time record with 39 career goals in NCAA Championship play.
Over her four years, she helped the Wildcats to a remarkable 77-5 record, including a 13-1 record in the NCAA Championship.
This is the third-straight year Kjellman was voted as one of the five finalists for the award. She also was recently named one of four finalists for the NCAA Honda Award for lacrosse. The winner, after nationwide balloting, will become a candidate for The Honda-Broderick Cup, awarded annually to the Collegiate Woman Athlete of the Year.
Teammate Hannah Nielsen also was one of tonight's five finalists for the award.
