CARMEL, Ind. -- Northwestern battled cold and windy conditions Monday at the Crooked Stick Golf Club just outside Indianapolis, and closed the day in seventh place at the Indiana Invitational.
The teams were originally scheduled to play 36 holes on Monday, but cold weather forced tournament officials to reduce today's action to one 18-hole round. The tournament concludes Tuesday with another 18 holes.
Senior Liliana Alvarez (Durango, Mexico/American School of Durango) continued her strong spring play, recording a 2-over 74 for second place among all players. She shared the lead heading into her final three holes, but a double bogey on No. 16 dropped her back into second place with five other golfers. She has finished first and second in her last two tournaments.
The remainder of the Northwestern squad did not fare as well. Junior Katie Trachok (Pittsburgh, Pa./Upper St. Clair) shot a 6-over 78 and is in 30th place. Senior Heather Scholten (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian) and sophomore Jennifer Hong (Windermere, Fla./The First Academy) shot 7-over 79's and are in 40th place. Senior Alice Kim (Los Angeles, Calif./Brentwood) carded a 8-over 80 and she is 46th overall.
Michigan State leads the Big Ten-dominated field and is 11-over (299) for the tournament. The Wildcats posted a 23-over 311, and are behind two other Big Ten squads -- Illinois (304) and Michigan (308).
