EVANSTON, Ill. -- Northwestern's women's golf team, which is ranked 32nd in the latest Golfweek/Sagarin Index, seeks to maintain the momentum gained from its last two tournaments when it travels to Carmel, Ind., for the Indiana Invitational this Monday and Tuesday, April 9-10.
The Wildcats are heading into the Indiana Invitational on the heels of their two best season performances. A little over a month ago at the Red Rocks Invitational, the 'Cats took home the team title -- their second team title of the season -- as senior Liliana Alvarez (Durango, Mexico/American School of Durango) tied for medalist honors. Two weekends ago, the 'Cats almost pulled off the double dip again at the Mountain View Collegiate, as they finished second as a team and Alvarez captured second place as an individual.
Since joining Northwestern this past fall, Alvarez has been a consistent force in the lineup, finishing no worse than 15th in all six tournaments she has played as a Wildcat.
The Indiana Invitational marks the Wildcats' first Midwest spring tournament, as they played their first three spring events in warm-weather locales. Besides the 32nd-ranked 'Cats, four other top-50 squads headline the tournament field: No. 21 Michigan State, No. 33 UNLV, No. 43 Michigan and No. 47 Indiana.
The 17-team field also includes four other Big Ten squads: Illinois, Iowa, Minnesota and Penn State. Rounding out the field are Ball State, Illinois State, Iowa State, Kentucky, Notre Dame, Oregon, Texas and Western Michigan.
For the first time, this year's edition of the Indiana Invitational will be played at Crooked Stick Golf Club, which was the site of the 1991 PGA Championship. It also will host the 2007 U.S. Women's Amateur later this year. The par-72 layout measures 5,924 yards for this tournament.
The 54-hole tournament begins with 36 holes on Monday and ends with the final round on Tuesday. Play on both days commences with a shotgun start, with Monday's play starting at 7:30 a.m. CT and Tuesday's play beginning at 8 a.m. CT.
