EVANSTON, Ill. -- Despite gutsy performances by senior Willy Lock (Lima, Peru/Markham College) at No. 1 singles and sophomore Marc Dwyer (Peachtree, City, Ga./Univ. of Nebraska-Independent Study H.S.) at No. 3, the Wildcats fell Friday to second-ranked Ohio State, 7-0.
The loss drops Northwestern to 7-11, 2-4 in the Big Ten while Ohio State improves to 19-1, 5-0.
Ohio State swept all three doubles matches to take the first point of the match. At No. 1, 31st-ranked Drew Eberly and Justin Kronauge downed Matt Christian (Troy, Mich./Brother Rice) and Lock, 8-4. Juan Gomez (Mexico City, Mexico) and Christian Tempke (Wentorf, Germany/LobrbrÜgge) fell to Steve Moneke and Bryan Koniecko at No. 3, 8-2.
The most exciting doubles match came at No. 2 where Dwyer and Alex Sanborn (Houston, Texas/Kinkaid) fell in a tiebreaker to 22nd-ranked Devin Mullings and Chris Klingemann, 8-7 (4). The Wildcat duo was up 5-2 and 7-4 in the match before the Buckeyes came back to tie the match at 7-7. Mullilngs and Klingemann took the tiebreaker, 7-4.
The Buckeyes went up 2-0 when Kronauge downed Christian at No. 4 singles, 6-0, 6-2. At No. 6, Sanborn fell to Eberly in straight sets, 6-0, 6-2. Ohio State clinched the dual at No. 2 singles where 23rd-ranked Koniecko topped Tempke, 6-3, 6-1.
Gomez fell to 66th-ranked Klingemann at No. 5 in straight sets, 6-2, 6-2. With the dual already decided, Lock and Dwyer, on the courts at No. 1 and No. 3, respectively, played hard-fought matches with their Buckeye counterparts. At No. 3, Dwyer dropped the first set to the seventh-ranked Moneke, 6-2, but the second frame was much closer as it went to a tiebreaker.
Dwyer had set point at 6-5 and 7-6 in the breaker, but Moneke touched the white lines on several winners to even the score. The Buckeye took an 8-7 advantage for his first match point and took the bout, 6-2, 7-6 (7), when a Dwyer forehand sailed wide.
Lock was the only Wildcat left on the court at No. 1 singles and he played a tight two-setter with the 35th-ranked Mullings. The Buckeye took the first set 7-5 and the second set was on serve until Mullings scored a break to go up 4-2. He held on to win the second set, 6-2.
The Wildcats return to action at noon Sunday against Indiana at the Combe Tennis Center.
