EVANSTON, Ill. -- For the seventh time in the last eight years, Northwestern's women's golf team has a chance to compete for the NCAA Division I national championship.
The Wildcats, ranked 34th in the latest Golfweek/Sagarin index, are one of 63 teams in this year's Championships, which begin Thursday, May 10. Three regional tournaments will be conducted May 10-12 to determine the national championships field. Northwestern is one of 21 teams competing in the Central Regional, which is being hosted by the University of Michigan (U of M Golf Course) in Ann Arbor, Mich.
The top eight teams and top two individuals from each region will advance to the NCAA Championships, which will be held May 22-25 at the LPGA International Golf Course in Daytona Beach, Fla. Northwestern is seeded 12th among the 21 Central Region teams.
"We are very pleased with the Central site assignment," said head coach Chris Regenberg. "The familiarity of the course and conditions is a benefit. The East looks like the toughest region competitively to advance. Our team played well at Big Ten's and another performance like that gives us a great opportunity to advance."
Northwestern, which is coming off a third-place finish at the Big Ten Championships, placed third out of 10 teams at the 2006 Wolverine Invitational.
Northwestern joins four other Big Ten teams -- Michigan State (No. 6 seed) Ohio State (No. 11 seed), Michigan (No. 13 seed) and Indiana (No. 17 seed) at the Central Regional. Purdue, which finished second at the Big Ten Championships but is the league's top-ranked team, is the No. 4 seed in the East Region.
The Wildcats, led by seniors Alice Kim (Los Angeles, Calif./Brentwood) and Liliana Alvarez (Durango, Mexico/American School of Durango), are making their third straight NCAA appearance. Northwestern has made NCAA appearances in 2000, 2001, 2002, 2004, 2005 and 2006. The 2000 team advanced to the NCAA National Championships.
