Box Score

EVANSTON, Ill. - Iowa scored in every inning but the second. They out-hit Northwestern 15-13. The Wildcats even had a 7-5 lead in the fifth inning. But the Hawkeyes outscored NU 8-1 in the final three innings to sweep Saturday's doubleheader and win game two 13-8. Senior Mike Kalina was 3-for-4 with three RBI and freshman Chad Noble hit a three-run home run in the loss.

Like they had done in the previous two games of the series, Iowa jumped out to an early first inning lead. The Hawkeyes plated one run on three straight singles off Wildcat starter Cole Livermore (St. Charles, Ill./St. Charles East). Livermore pitched five complete innings.

Freshman lefty David Jensen (Whittier, Calif./Mater Dei) relieved Livermore and threw one and one-third innings before junior Bo Schultz (Dallas, Texas/Highland Park) finished the game. Jensen gave up four runs on four hits.

Northwestern responded with three runs in the bottom of the second to take a 3-1 lead after two innings. Freshman catcher Chad Noble (Rockwall, Texas/Rockwall) blasted his third home run of the season, a three-run shot deep over the left-field wall.

Iowa tied the game 3-3 with a pair of runs off a two-run home run in the top of the third inning.

Again, NU responded with two runs in the bottom half of the third to recapture the lead, 5-3. Senior Mike Kalina (Munster, Ind./Munster) tattooed his first home run of the season over the right centerfield wall fence for a two-run shot.

The Hawkeyes came right back the very next inning and tied the game 5-5 with a two-out, two-RBI triple.

For the third time, NU responded to retake the lead, this time scoring two runs on three straight single to start the inning. Junior third baseman Jake Owens (Stevens Point, Wis./Pacelli) tallied an RBI triple. The other run scored on a controversial balk call that eventually got two Iowa coaches tossed from the game.

The Hawkeyes then exploded for eight runs over the final three innings.

Kalina drove in his third run of the game with a seventh-inning single. Fields scored on the play after hitting his seventh double of the season.

The two teams wrap up their four-game Big Ten series with a single nine-inning contest tomorrow at 1 p.m.
