Wildcats Want to Make Some Noise at Big Ten Championships

EVANSTON, Ill. -- Northwestern had its first major breakthrough at last year's Big Ten Championships, as senior Alice Kim (Los Angeles, Calif./Brentwood) claimed Northwestern's first individual medalist honor. This year, the Wildcats want more. With arguably one of the best teams in the program's 15-year history, Northwestern will head to East Lansing, Mich., for this year's edition of the Big Ten Championships.
A trio of seniors have led the charge for the Wildcats this year, with newcomer Liliana Alvarez (Durango, Mexico/American School of Durango) out in front. Alvarez, who transferred from Tulane to NU with a year of eligibility remaining, has been a consistent force in the Wildcat lineup, placing in the top 15 in seven out of eight events and taking home medalist honors at the Red Rocks Invitational.
Northwestern also has gotten significant contributions from seniors Kim and Heather Scholten (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian). Kim, who is on pace to shatter Northwestern's career stroke average record, claimed the second medalist honor of her collegiate career this year at the Lady Paladin. Scholten is having a career year as team captain and boasts a 77.24 stroke average.
Besides the trio of seniors, junior Brittany Johnston (Akron, Ohio/Walsh Jesuit) and sophomore Jennifer Hong (Windermere, Fla./The First Academy) also currently have stroke averages for the year that would place them in Northwestern's top-10 for stroke average in a single season.
The return to East Lansing and Forest Akers West Golf Course will bring the 'Cats full circle for the season. Northwestern opened the year on the same course at the Lady Northern Invitational, finishing second behind host Michigan State as all six Wildcat golfers placed in the top 20 individually.
