COLUMBUS, Ohio -- Northwestern, ranked No. 33 in the latest GolfweekSagarin index, moved up three spots to finish sixth at the Lady Buckeye Spring Invitational, held at Ohio State's challenging Scarlet Course.
The tournament, which included nine Big Ten teams and served as a final tune-up for next week's Big Ten Championships, was won by 13th-ranked Purdue, which had two of its players finish first and second.
The Wildcats received a strong third-round effort from senior Heather Scholten (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian), who posted a 2-over 74 to finish 21st after starting the day in 46th place. Her 74 was bettered by only two golfers on Sunday, one of whom was Purdue's Maria Hernandez, who won the tournament with a 1-under 215. Scholten finished 22-over (79-85-74=238).
Junior Brittany Johnston (Akron, Ohio/Walsh Jesuit), who paced the 'Cats on Saturday, carded a 5-over 77 and placed ninth with a 15-over 231 (74-80-77). It was Johnston's third top-10 showing of the year.
Katie Trachok (Pittsburgh, Pa./Upper St. Clair), another junior, equaled Scholten's 21st-place finish with a 22-over 238 (76-82-80). Sophomore Jennifer Hong (Windermere, Fla./The First Academy) followed Scholten and Trachok with a 24-over 240 (78-84-78), good enough for 30th place.
Northwestern's top two golfers this season -- seniors Liliana Alvarez (Durango, Mexico/American School of Durango) and Alice Kim (Los Angeles, Calif./Brentwood) -- finished 37th and 42nd, respectively. Alvarez closed at 27-over (80-81-82=243) while Kim was 29-over (81-85-79=245).
