EVANSTON, Ill. -- Northwestern squares off against eight of its Big Ten foes, along with five other talented Midwest teams, this weekend at the Lady Buckeye Invitational. Ohio State is playing host to this weekend's tournament.
The invitational is the final tune-up for conference teams prepping for next weekend's Big Ten Championships at Michigan State. The Wildcats were last in action on April 10, when they placed sixth at the Indiana Invitational. The team was buoyed by strong performances from Liliana Alvarez (Durango, Mexico/American School of Durango) and Heather Scholten (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian).
Alvarez remains the `Cats' consistent anchor heading into the homestretch. The Tulane transfer ranks a team-best No. 83 nationally in Golfweek's individual rankings. NU is also seeking strong performances from reigning Big Ten individual champion Alice Kim (Los Angeles, Calif./Brentwood) and fellow senior and captain Scholten.
The 14-team field at the Lady Buckeye features five nationally ranked squads, including Northwestern. The Wildcats are currently No. 33 in the most recent Golfweek team rankings. Purdue headlines as tournament favorite, ranked No. 12 nationally.
Joining Purdue and Northwestern are 22nd-ranked Michigan State, 32nd-ranked and host Ohio State, 48th-ranked Indiana, Iowa, Penn State, Wisconsin, Illinois, Eastern Michigan, Kent State, Ohio, Western Michigan and Toledo.
The Lady Buckeye is being played on OSU's Scarlet Golf Course, once named best collegiate golf course in the country by Golf Digest.
