TUCSON, Ariz. -- Sparked by a second-round 4-under 68 from senior Liliana Alvarez (Durango, Mexico/American School of Durango), Northwestern climbed into second place at the 16-team Mountain View Collegiate on Saturday.
Alvarez, who missed tying the Northwestern single-round school record (67) by one stroke, fired an even-par 72 for the first 18 holes and is one stroke behind the tourney co-leaders, Elaine Harris of Indiana and Kendall Dye of Oklahoma.
Alvarez's play on Saturday kept the Wildcats in the hunt for another Mountain View title. They won the title in 2005. Northwestern is 10 strokes (294-288=582) behind Nebraska (287-285=572). The 'Cats hold a narrow lead over Baylor (583), Indiana (584) and Iowa State (585).
Senior Heather Scholten (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian) carded a 1-under 71 for the first round and is in 14th place overall with a 1-over 145 (71-74).
Juniors Brittany Johnston (Akron, Ohio/Walsh Jesuit) and Justina Yu (Las Vegas, Nev./Bishop Gorman) are tied for 43rd place. Both players are 5-over for the tournament.
Senior Alice Kim (Los Angeles, Calif./Brentwood) had a sub-par first day, carding rounds of 76 and 78 and has a 10-over 154. She is in 70th place.
The third and final round is set for Sunday.
