EVANSTON, Ill. - With NCAA Championships bids on the line at the Regionals over the weekend at Notre Dame, a number of Wildcats made strong cases to advance to college fencing's highest stage. Sophomore Sam Nemecek (Caledonia, Mich./Caledonia) was NU's top finisher, placing second in foil.

Also in foil, Jessica Florendo (Forest Hills, N.Y./The Dwight School) finished third and Natalie Wang (Milpitas, Calif./Presentation placed seventh, one spot ahead of freshman Meredith Baskies (Lynnfield, Mass./Boston University Academy). Nemecek and Florendo likely qualified for NCAAs, while the others will miss out because any single team is allowed just two representatives in each weapon.

In epee, sisters Christa and Kayley French were Northwestern's top finishers. Kayley French (Southlake, Texas/Carroll) placed fifth and Christa French seventh.

In sabre, seniors Mai Vu (New York, N.Y./Bronx Science) and Sophie Eustis (Andover, Mass./Concord Academy) battled it out for seventh place with Vu winning 15-11.
