LUBBOCK, Texas - Texas Tech avenged a 12-7 Friday loss to Northwestern by defeating the Wildcats 4-3 Sunday morning at Dan Law Field in Lubbock, Texas. Tech led the entire game as NU kept it close throughout the nine-inning affair. The loss drops NU to 1-2 on the season.

Texas Tech took an early 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning off Wildcat freshman hurler Matt Diedrich (Hawthorn Woods, Ill./Carmel). A one-out double scored on a base hit. Diedrich struck out two in the inning..

NU came right back in the top of the third inning, plating a pair of runs on four hits and a sacrifice bunt. Shortstop Tommy Finn (Valparaiso, Ind./Andrean) led off the inning with a single and moved to second on Kenneth Avila's (Corpus Christi, Texas./W.B. Ray) sacrifice bunt. After a fly ball out, three straight singles scored the Wildcats' two runs. Second baseman Jake Owens (Stevens Point, Wis./Pacelli) and right fielder Antonio Mule (Lodi, N.J./Lodi) each tallied RBI.

The Red Raiders recaptured the lead 3-2 in the bottom of the fifth inning as a solo home run and a double came around to score.

Tech added an insurance run in the bottom of the sixth and chased Deidrich from the game. He gave up four runs in five and two-third innings, struck out four and walked three in his first collegiate start.

With two outs and a runner on second base, junior Matt Havey (Wilmette, Ill./Loyola) took over mound duties. He quickly got a fly ball to end the inning with the score 4-2 Tech.

After holding Tech, NU pulled to within one, 4-3, off the bat of freshman Chad Noble (Rockwall, Texas/Rockwall). First baseman Jake Goebbert (Hampshire, Ill./Hampshire) coaxed a walk, moved to second on a wild pitch, advanced to third on a balk and scored on Noble's single to left field.

Freshman David Jensen (Whittier, Calif./Mater Dei) started the eighth inning for NU. After a leadoff walk, three ground balls ended the inning.

NU went quietly in the ninth inning.

The Wildcats are next in action when they travel to Beaumont, Texas to take on Lamar February 23 at 6:30 p.m. Northwestern will play three games while in Beaumont, also taking on Arkansas State and Creighton.
