Wildcats Defeat Creighton 4-3; End Cardinal Classic 1-2

BEAUMONT, Texas - Northwestern's baseball team scored two runs in the sixth inning and held off Creighton for a 4-3 win Sunday afternoon at the Cardinal Classic in Beaumont, Texas. The win improves the Wildcats season record to 2-4 and 1-2 in Texas. Senior Ryan Myers pitched six strong innings for the win and freshman Chad Noble hit his first collegiate home run in the win.
Creighton found the scoring column first inning off Wildcat starter Ryan Myers (Lake Villa, Ill./Carmel). A leadoff single went to second on a balk and advanced to third on an error. A single plated the run.
Myers pitched six innings for the win. He gave up two runs on six hits, while striking out five.
NU tied the game in the second inning when Caleb Fields (Oak Park, Ill./Fenwick) scored on a double-play groundball. Fields singled in his at-bat and went to second on a single by freshman Jake Goebbert (Hampshire, Ill./Hampshire).
The Wildcats grabbed the lead 2-1 in the top of the third when catcher Chad Noble (Rockwall, Texas/Rockwall) hit his first collegiate home run to centerfield.
Northwestern scored two runs in the sixth inning to take a 4-1 lead. Junior Aaron Newman (Palatine, Ill./Palatine) led off with a double down the left field line and went to third on a balk. He scored on a passed ball by the catcher. Junior Antonio Mule (Lodi, N.J./Lodi) got things started again with a one-out walk. After a strikeout, Goebbert walked to put runners on first and second with two outs. Designated hitter Geoff Dietz (Lake Zurich, Ill./Lake Zurich) then lined a single through the left side of the infield to score Mule.
Creighton plated a single run in the bottom of the sixth when a leadoff walk came around to score on an error.
In the bottom of the seventh inning, freshman David Jensen (Whittier, Calif./Mater Dei) came on in relief of Myers. Jensen pitched the final three innings for his second save of the season. He gave up one run on one hit, walked three and struck out one.
NU is next in action when they travel to Arlington, Texas to play three games at Clay Gould Ballpark, home of the University of Texas-Arlington. Game one is schedule for 6:30 p.m. March 2.
