
Northwestern Finishes Seventh At Big Ten Championships

MINNEAPOLIS -- Northwestern took seventh place in the 2007 Big Ten Championships, concluding the three-day meet Saturday just one point behind sixth-place Purdue after recording some impressive swims and earning one NCAA 'A' automatic qualification time.
The Wildcats finished with 301 points, 114 points ahead of eighth-place Ohio State. Indiana won the team title with 715.5 points.
The third day of competition got underway with the final heat of the 1,650 freestyle, with freshman Kassia Shishkoff (Raleigh, N.C./St. David's School) swimming a 'B' time of 16:37.71 to take ninth place. Classmate Mary Beth Francis (San Diego, Calif./Mission Viejo) was 13th with a season-best and 'B' time of 16:52.25, while Jenn Kocsis (Omaha, Neb./Marian) ended up 23rd with a 17:08.14.
In the 200 back, freshman Genny Szymanski (Haines, Alaska/Haines) earned a spot in the championship final with a season-best and NCAA 'B' time of 1:59.38 before finishing eighth with a 2:02.55 in the finals. Sophomore Sara White Delehoy (Kent, Wash./Kentlake) also swam in the event, turning in a 2:09.69 to finish 46th.
In the 100, Northwestern's sprinters turned in a pair of good performances. Junior Andrea Hupman (Lawrenceville, Ga./Brookwood) went 50.01 in the prelims before churning out a 49.32 'A' time to finish third. Teammate Emily Wong (Nepean, Ontario/St. Joseph's) also was in the championship final after a 50.50 prelim swim, which she lowered to a 50.06 'B' cut to take fourth.
Freshman Stacy Congdon (Windermere, Fla./Lake Highland Prep) also participated in the event, swimming a 52.48 to take 35th.
In the 200 breast, sophomore Hayley Fry (Marion, Iowa/Linn-Mar) qualified for the consolation final with a 2:17.80, then swam a 1:18.93 to take 14th place. Junior Jessie Bailis (Omaha, Neb./Millard North) had a 2:21.61 during the prelims to finish 25th, while Jill Forster (Centerville, Ohio/Centerville) had a 2:28.60 to end up 42nd.
In the 200 fly, both Rachel Rys (Goleta, Calif./Dos Pueblos) and Katie Braun (Edina, Minn./Edina) qualified for the consolation final. Rys went a 2:01.41 'B' cut to end up 13th during the evening swim, while Braun turned in a 2:03.68 to finish 16th.
In platform diving, junior Beth Campbell (Burr Ridge, Ill./Fenwick) scored a 188.05 to take 22nd place for the 'Cats.
The meet concluded with the 400 free relay, and Northwestern nailed down its third top-three relay finish of the meet. The team of Hupman, Wong, Braun and Shishkoff swam an NCAA 'B' time of 3:20.66 to finish third.
Hupman, Wong, Kocsis and Shishkoff all earned spots on the All-Big Ten second team for their efforts at the Championships. The four honorees mark the most for Northwestern since earning five in 2000.
