BLOOMINGTON, Ind.-- Northwestern's final regular season game of the year ended in heartbreaking fashion with a 2-1 loss to Indiana in Bloomington, which was its second straight one-goal Big Ten loss.
Senior Amanda Care (Newtown, Pa./Pennsbury) scored the Wildcats (4-13, 0-6) lone goal on a penalty stroke. The stroke followed a shot by Jill Putnam (Greenfield, Mass./Greenfield) on a penalty corner, which was saved by the IU keeper. The goal was the senior's third of the year and tied the game at 1-1 after the Hoosiers (8-9,1-5) put the first goal on the board 10 minutes into the contest.
IU's game-winning goal came in the game's 53rd minute on a shot from the top of the circle.
Overall, Northwestern took six shots, earned five penalty corners and made three saves in the game. Putnam and Courtney Plaster-Strange (Hodgenville, Ky./Kentucky Country Day) led the team in shots with two a piece, while seniors Katie Charles (Worthington, Ohio/Thomas Worthington) and Care took the other two.
Northwestern opens up the Big Ten Tournament on Thursday in Columbus, Ohio.
