EVANSTON, Ill.-- With just one opponent standing in the way of being an all-Northwestern singles finals, freshman Maria Mosolova (Moscow, Russia) dispatched a former NCAA Champion, who is the fourth-ranked player in the nation, Suzi Babos from Cal, 6-3, 6-2, leaving her to face teammate Georgia Rose (Mettawa, Ill./North Shore County Day) in the singles bracket final at the Nike Cal Invitational last weekend at Berkeley, Calif.
To reach the finals, Rose defeated teammate Samantha Murray (Altrincham, England/Altrincham Grammar), 6-2, 6-1 in the semifinals. The finals match between Rose and Mosolova was then abandoned.
NU's tandem of Alexis Conill (Fort Lauderdale, Fla./Cardinal Gibbons) and Lauren Lui (Houston, Texas/Kinkaid) finished Laila Abdala and Lauren Megale of Arizona State, 9-7, in the finals of the Gold ITA Doubles tournament to take home the title. Murray and Suzie Metzenauer (Tacoma, Wash./Bellarmine) reached the semifinals before falling in the same tournament.
In the Blue ITA Doubles, Mosolova and Nazlie Ghazal (Temecula, Calif./Chaparral) teamed up to defeat the No. 1 seeded pair of Kelcy McKenna and Nadia Abdala, also from Arizona State, in the championship, which gave Northwestern its second doubles title of the day.
Overall in the tournament, NU sent seven student-athletes and all reached at least the semifinal round of their respective brackets.
NU will next play in the All-American Qualifier and All-American Main Draw at the Riviera Club in Pacific Palisades, Calif., before returning home to compete in the Wildcat Invitational on Oct. 5-7.
