ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. -- Seventh-ranked Northwestern took all three doubles matches and surrendered only one set in singles en route to a 7-0 win over No. 67 New Mexico Saturday night. The Wildcats return to action at 4 p.m. next Saturday when they travel to Atlanta to face top-ranked Georgia Tech.

Northwestern improves to 2-0 while the Lobos fall to 1-2.

Northwestern quickly took the doubles point with wins at No. 1 and No. 2. At No. 1, the pair of sophomore Lauren Lui (Houston, Texas/Kinkaid) and junior Georgia Rose (Mettawa, Ill./North Shore Country Day) defeated Lucy Scott and Sandra Zmak, 8-1. At No. 2, sophomores Samantha Murray (Altrincham, England/Altrincham Grammar) and Suzie Matzenauer (Tacoma, Wash./Bellarmine) downed Ola Abou-Zekry and Emma Hayman, 8-3.

The Lobos' Jennifer Ryba and Victoria Tessmar closed to 6-4 against the No. 3 team of Alexis Conill (Fort Lauderdale, Fla./Cardinal Gibbons) and freshman Maria Mosolova (Moscow, Russia), but the Wildcats took the match, 8-5, to sweep the doubles portion.

Murray, ranked 20th in the nation, was the first off the courts in singles with a straight-set 6-2, 6-1 win at No. 3 over the Lobos' lone ranked player, the 85th-ranked Zmak.

Matzenauer was next at No. 6 singles as she also only gave up three games en route to a 6-1, 6-2 win over Ryba. Second-ranked Mosolova captured the clincher at No. 1 with a straight-set 6-2, 6-4 victory over Abou-Zekry.

Nazlie Ghazal (Temecula, Calif./Chaparral) also needed just two sets to defeat Hayman at No. 5, 6-2, 6-2, and the ninth-ranked Rose took a 6-4, 6-3 win at No. 2 over Mackenzie White. Rose was down 4-0 in the first set, but won the next 10 games to take a 4-0 lead in the second set before giving up her next game.

The last match on the courts was the No. 4 singles contest between Scott and Lui. Lui rolled through the first set, 6-1, but after falling in a tiebreaker in the second set, the match went to a 10-point match tiebreaker. The sophomore took the breaker 10-1 to win the match and give the Wildcats their second sweep in as many dual matches.

The Wildcats return to action at 4 p.m. Saturday, February 2, at Georgia Tech. The Yellow Jackets are ranked No. 1 in the nation and are the defending NCAA champions. Georgia Tech defeated the Wildcats in their meeting last season, 4-3, at the Combe Tennis Center.
