NEW YORK CITY - Northwestern women's fencing head coach Laurie Schiller's quest for win number 900 was bittersweet as the Wildcats competed in the NYU Duals over the weekend. Needing just one win for illustrious 900, Schiller led his team into a field that consisted of five--including the fifth-ranked Wildcats--of the top seven teams in the country. Schiller did win No. 900, but the team was a disappointing 2-4. Schiller's overall record is now 901-401.
NU did compete well, they came up a couple touches short against some of the top teams in the country. As a matter of fact, three of NU's four losses were by three touches or less, including a pair of one-touch defeats to No. 4 Notre Dame (14-13) and t-No. 6 Ohio State (14-13). Northwestern did defeat NYU (20-7) and Yale (21-6), but succumbed to No. 2 Columbia (17-10) and t-No. 6 St. John's (15-12). NU is 18-5 on the season.
Sophomore Sam Nemecek (Caledonia, Mich./Caledonia) did not lose any of her best-of-three duals and compiled a 15-3 record in the six meets. Fellow foilist Jessica Florendo (Forest Hills, N.Y./The Dwight School) was 14-4 as the pair helped the foil team to a 5-1 record. Sisters Kayley and Christa French (Southlake, Texas/Carroll) combined for a 21-9 record with Kayley French leading the way at 13-4. They led the epée squad to a 5-1 weekend. The sabre team was 3-3.
NU is back in action next weekend when they travel to San Diego, Calif., for the University of California-San Diego (UCSD) Duals.
