'Cats Go 5-1 at Haverford Invitational

EVANSTON, Ill. - Northwestern's women's fencing team went 5-1 at the Haverford Invitational in Haverford, Pa., over the weekend. NU's five wins improved its season record to 16-1 and moved head coach Laurie Schiller to within one win of 900 (899-397).
The `Cats 15-12 loss came against a highly touted Penn team. The Wildcats defeated Sacred Heart (23-4), Vassar (24-3), Drew (24-3), Duke (19-8) and Haverford (23-4).
Sophomore foilist Sam Nemecek (Caledonia, Mich./Caledonia) continued her stellar second season with a 15-1 record. Her only loss was to Sasha Stein of Duke. Freshman Christa French (Southlake, Texas/Carroll) went 6-2 in limited epée action. Fellow epeeist, freshman Joanna Niklinska (Granger, Ind./Penn), went 6-1 on the weekend to up her season win-loss record to 14-1. In sabre, senior Mai Vu (New York, N.Y./Bronx Science) led the way with a 9-2 mark.
Northwestern is back in action next Saturday when they travel to the Big Apple to take part in the NYU (New York University) Duals. NU went 3-1 at the 2005-06 NYU Duals.
