EVANSTON, Ill. -- Behind eight goals and 26 shots, the Northwestern Wildcats defeated the Morehead State Eagles 8-0 Friday at the Leonard B. Thomas Athletics. Junior Kelsey Hans (Lakeville, Minn./Lakeville) netted two goals in a two-minute span early in the second half and Junior Shannon Schneeman (St. Paul, Minn./Cretin-Derham School) scored on a penalty kick and notched two assists.

The Wildcats went right at the Eagles from the opening whistle, putting pressure on the Morehead State defense. They finally broke through in the 13th minute when sophomore Jeanette Lorme (Santa Clarita, Calif./Saugus) took a pass from Schneeman, dribbled into the box and scored on a shot from 10 yards out. It was the first goal for the Wildcats since their second game of the season against Kentucky.

Northwestern came into the contest leading the Big Ten in corner kicks per game, but had not converted on one through four games. That changed in the 20th minute when senior Tori Bohannon (Neenah, Wis./Neenah) headed a corner kick from Schneeman into the net. The 'Cats took a 2-0 lead and the senior defender recorded the third goal of her career and Schneeman got her second assist of the game.

Sophomore Jenny Dunn netted her first goal of the year in the 33rd minute when she seemed to have a one-on-one opportunity with the goalkeeper and took a shot from point-blank range. The ball deflected off a late-charging defender into the back of the net. Dunn was credited with the goal to give Northwestern a 3-0 lead. The 'Cats' fourth goal came in the 40th minute when sophomore Krystal Patterson (St. Louis, Mo./Shiloh(Ga.)) scored on a crossing pass from fellow sophomore Laura Janowitsch (Grafton, Wis./Grafton). It was Patterson's first goal of the year. Schneeman recorded her third goal and eighth point of the season on a penalty kick in the 41st minute. That concluded the first half scoring and the 'Cats went into the break with a 5-0 lead.

Hans got into the action at the start of the second half when she scored two goals in a two-minute span. The first was assisted by freshman Jessica Palo (Ames, Iowa/Ames). Palo scored the first goal of her career in the 49th minute off a pass from fellow freshman Katherine Sampson (San Francisco, Calif./Drew School).

"We have a lot of goal-scorers on this team and it hasn't been going our way," head coach Stephanie Erickson said. "I'm happy that people like Hans and Dunn could put a couple away to get things going for them."

The Wildcats welcomed a former player back to Evanston Friday. Erin Aubrey, the head coach of the Morehead State Eagles, played alongside Northwestern coaches Stephanie Erickson, Erin Ekeberg, and Brooke Bean during the 'Cats' run to the NCAA quarterfinals in 1998. The Wildcats return to action at 1 p.m. Sunday when they host the Ball State Cardinals.
