Roth Leads Wildcats to 2-0 Win Over Bradley

DeKALB Ill.-- Behind two second half goals from junior Dave Roth, the Northwestern men's soccer team earned a 2-0 win this afternoon over the Bradley Braves in the first game of the Adidas/Baymont Inn Invitational on the campus of Northern Illinois. The win moves NU to 4-1 on the season while Bradley falls to 1-3-1.
After a scoreless first period in which the Wildcats held Bradley to only three shots, Northwestern turned it up offensively after the break. But it wasn't until the 65th minute of play when Carl Pett found Roth for the first goal of the game.
The Wildcats then added an insurance goal 12 minutes later in the 77th minute when Daniel Chille and Gerardo Alvarez assisted on Roth's second goal to put the game out of reach. It was Roth's third goal of the season which leads the team.
Roth leads the team in total points (8) in 2006 with three goals and two assists.
"I thought we played pretty well today," head coach Tim Lenahan said. "We were able to possess the ball for a long period of time for the first time this year and in doing so won a little bit differently today. The stats show that the shots were equal, but a lot of their shots came in the final minutes.
"Carl Pett made a spectacular play to set up Dave's first goal. Then Dan Chille was able to do his thing on the second goal and find Dave again. I'm very pleased with our performance today and now we have to get ready for a big game on Sunday against a very good Drake team."
Will Briley, who played all 90 minutes and picked up five saves in goal for Northwestern, upped his record to 3-1.
The Wildcats will take on Drake at 11 a.m. CT in Sunday's first game.
