EAST LANSING, Mich. -- Northwestern has started the 2006-07 season in strong fashion, sitting second among 12 teams at the traditional fall-opening Lady Northern Invitational. The Wildcats, who return all their key players from a year ago, are just two strokes back of tourney host Michigan State.
Northwestern, which is two strokes in front of Ohio State and Michigan, was paced Saturday by junior Brittany Johnston (Akron, Ohio/Walsh Jesuit), who carded rounds of 75 and 73 for a 4-over 148. She is in a sixth-place tie and six strokes behind Kent State's Tara Delaney.
Northwestern has four other players in the top-25 with sophomore Jennifer Hong (Windermere, Fla./The First Academy), senior Heather Scholten (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian) and junior Katie Trachok (Pittsburgh, Pa./Upper St. Clair) all in 15th place at 8-over while newcomer and former Tulane player Liliana Alvarez (Durango, Mexico/American School of Durango) is 9-over.
The third and final round is set for Sunday morning.
Live results for the 54-hole invitational can be found at Lady Northern Invitational.
