EVANSTON, ILL. -- Sophomore Krystal Patterson (St. Louis, Mo./Shiloh(Ga.)) registered two goals in Northwestern's 3-1 victory over Northern Illinois. Fellow sophomore Jenny Dunn (Pacific Palisades, Calif./Louisville) opened the scoring in the 12th minute and the Wildcats never gave up the lead. The 'Cats will host Western Michigan Sunday in their final non-conference match.
Northwestern came into the game trying to bounce back from a 1-0 loss to Ball State last Sunday and the Wildcats did not waste any time getting the offense going. Dunn took a pass from junior Kelsey Hans (Lakeville, Minn./Lakeville) and had a one-on-one opportunity with the Huskies' goalkeeper. Dunn chipped the ball into the net to give Northwestern a 1-0 lead in the 12th minute. It was the sophomore's second goal of the season. The 'Cats padded their lead in the 21st minute when Patterson, who had checked into the game a few minutes earlier, scored in the 21st minute to put the Wildcats ahead 2-0. The assist by Hans was her second of the game and tied her with junior Shannon Schneeman (St. Paul, Minn./Cretin-Derham School) for the team lead in points with eight. The Huskies responded quickly and made the score 2-1 on a goal in the 23rd minute. The teams entered the break with the 'Cats ahead, 2-1.
Patterson's spectacular day continued in the second half when she drew a penalty kick chance in the 58th minute. Sophomore Jeanette Lorme's (Santa Clarita, Calif./Saugus) shot was denied by goalkeeper Lindsey Curnock, but the rebound found the foot of Patterson who deposited it back into the net for her second goal of the day, third of the season and the tally that put the 'Cats on top, 3-1.
"Krystal's performance was amazing, head coach Stephanie Erickson said. She is so great at coming off the bench and raising the level for us. She was unbelievable and single-handedly got us two goals."
Northwestern's record improves to 3-4 on the year and they can climb to .500 when they host Western Michigan Sunday at 12:30 p.m. at the Leonard B. Thomas Athletic Complex.
