Box Score

EVANSTON, Ill. -- Sophomore Jenny Dunn (Pacific Palisades, Calif./Louisville) and senior Tori Bohannon (Neenah, Wis./Neenah) netted a pair of goals as Northwestern cruised to a 5-1 win over Western Michigan Sunday at the Lenoard B. Thomas Athletic Complex. The Wildcats begin the Big Ten portion of their schedule Friday when they host Iowa.

Northwestern came roaring out of the opening whistle, jumping out to a 1-0 lead in the fourth minute. Kelsey Hans (Lakeville, Minn./Lakeville) took a point-blank shot that deflected off the Western Michigan goaltender onto the foot of Bohannon, who put the rebound into the net for the goal. The Broncos quickly evened the score in the sixth minute, but that tally would be their last of the game. The 'Cats pulled ahead in the 29th minute when Dunn scored her first goal. It would prove to be the game-winner and Northwestern went into halftime with a 2-1 lead.

The Wildcats did not waste any time getting on the board in the second stanza. Dunn scored her second goal of the game, third of the weekend and fourth of the season to extend the lead to 3-1. Freshman Zendzi Neal (Washington, D.C./Washington International) and sophomore Laura Janowitsch (Grafton, Wis./Grafton) registered the assists. Dunn took a crossing pass and used only her body to propel the ball into the net. The goal makes Dunn two goals shy of her freshman year mark of six.

Neal, who notched the first point of her career with the assist on Dunn's goal, scored a goal of her own in the 41st minute to push the lead to 4-1. The freshman made a strong move after receiving a pass from Janowitsch and put the ball away for the score.

Northwestern's fifth goal was not without controversy. The Wildcats received a free kick from 20 yards away after junior Danielle Iordanou (Upper Brookeville, N.Y./Our Lady of Mercy) drew a foul in the 61st minute. Junior Shannon Schneeman (St. Paul, Minn./Cretin-Derham Hall) took the kick and after the ball hit a post, Bohannon put away the rebound for her second goal of the day. It seemed the Wildcats had made the score 5-1. However, an official momentarily disallowed the goal, ruling that the ball did not touch another player off a free kick. After a conference by the officials, Bohannon received credit for the deflection and the goal.

"We did a lot of learning in the first part of the season" head coach Stephanie Erickson said. "We are really starting to see what our identity is. We needed to come out of this weekend feeling confident and we do."

Northwestern hosts Iowa and Illinois to start Big Ten season and finish a nine-game homestand. The 'Cats face Iowa at 4 p.m. Friday at the Leonard B. Thomas Athletic Complex.

Notes from Northwestern's non-conference season:
• Senior Tori Bohannon, now with three goals and seven points, has eclipsed her career marks in both those categories. Bohannon came into the season with two goals and five points, never having scored more than one goal in a season.
•Sophomore Krystal Patterson (St. Louis, Mo./Shiloh (Ga.)) set a new career high in goals with a tally against Northern Illinois. She scored two in her freshman aseason and has three in 2006.
•Junior Shannon Schneeman now has nine points on the year. She set a career-high of 15 in 2004 with five goals and five assists.
•Sophomore Laura Janowitsch, with three assists in 2006, has passed her freshman year total of one.
•Three Wildcat freshmen have scored points through the first eight games. Zendzi Neal and Jessica Palo (Ames, Iowa/Ames) both have three and Katherine Sampson (San Francisco, Calif./Drew School) has one.
