Evanston, Ill. -- Sophomore Annie Bosslet (Granite City, Ill./Villa Duchesne) connected with Elizabeth Dobbs (Wellesley, Mass./St. Ignatius) just over a minute into overtime to keep the 'Cats (4-4) undefeated at home with a 3-2 victory over Stanford Friday afternoon.
"I thought we made adjustments when we needed to," Head Coach Kelly McCollum said. "We played through any adversity that came up and continued to play our game and that came through for us in overtime."
Stanford got on the scoreboard first, finding the back of the cage 13 minutes into the game. Northwestern responded with a goal a few minutes later when Katie Charles (Worthington, Ohio/Thomas Worthington) followed-up a blocked shot by Meg Small (Bethlehem, Pa./Moravian Academy).
After a 1-1 halftime deadlock, the Cardinal once again found the scoring column first in the new stanza.
But the Wildcats once again found an answer. Charles delivered a perfect corner pass to sophomore Alex Quinn (Watertown, Mass./Watertown) who set up the goal for senior Christina Foley (Cape Elizabeth, Maine/Cape Elizabeth). It was Foley's third goal on the season.
Intense play by both sides could not produce the deciding goal in regulation. It took only 1:25 into the extra session for a winner to be decided. Bosslet broke away up the sideline and found Dobbs in a one-on-one situation inside the circle. The freshman pushed the game-winning score past her defender and into the back of the cage.
Northwestern returns to action tomorrow when it faces Yale at 1 p.m. at the Leonard B. Thomas Athletic Complex.
