EVANSTON, Ill.-- Junior midfielder David Roth (St. Louis, Mo./Chaminade) has been named this week's Big Ten Offensive Player of the Week in recognition of his outstanding efforts over the weekend, the conference office announced Monday. This is the first honor of Roth's career and the first for the Wildcats this season.
Roth scored three goals over the weekend to help the Wildcats go 2-0 and clinch the championship of the 2006 Adidas/Baymont Inn Invitational hosted by Northern Illinois. Roth tallied both Northwestern goals in Friday's 2-0 win over Bradley before scoring his third goal of the weekend Sunday against Drake in the second half to tie the game at 1-1.
Roth, who was named to the all-tournament team, leads the Wildcats in both goals (4) and points (10) this season. He is tied for first on Northwestern all-time assists list (22) with teammate Gerardo Alvarez (Aurora, Ill./Marmion Academy).
The Wildcats are back in action at 3 p.m. CT this Sunday when they open Big Ten play by hosting Ohio State at the Thomas Athletic Complex.
