Evanston, Ill. Northwestern picked up its first win at home downing Missouri State 3-2 in overtime Friday afternoon. The 'Cats improve to 2-1 on the season while Missouri State falls to 0-2.
"I am proud of the team because we worked as a unit," head coach Kelly McCollum said. "I was impressed with our overall performance and our persistence. I thought we used our speed and skill to create opportunities which carried over into overtime and allowed us to win."
Missouri State was the first to jump on the scoreboard, as Melissa Millin pushed a shot into the left corner of the cage. The Wildcats had an answer, though, as Cassie Miller (Lake Forest, Ill./Lake Forest) connected with Alison Bullock (Boyds, Md./Stone Ridge) to even up the game. It was Bullock's second goal of the season, and the most by any Wildcat this year.
Freshman Courtney Plaster (Hodgenville, Ky./Kentucky Country Day) broke away from the pack to score her first career goal, which also boosted NU's lead to 2-1 right before the half.
MSU came back to even the score on a goal by Melissa Behr at the 46:31 mark. The score remained 2-2 as the clock counted down to zero.
Six minutes and 43 seconds into the extra session, Miller found sophomore Annie Bosslet (Granite City, Ill./Villa Duchesne) for the game-winning goal. It was also Bosslet's first score of the season.
The Wildcats out shot Missouri State 31-8 and earned 13 corners to MSU's four.
Northwestern returns to the field at 1 p.m. on Sunday when it takes on Maine at the Leonard B. Thomas Athletic Complex.
