OXFORD, Ohio -- Northwestern opened the 2006 campaign with a tough 3-1 loss on the road to Miami (Ohio).
"We did not set the tone of the game from the beginning," head coach Kelly McCollum said. "Miami had more energy and effort and set the tone from the start. Although we are disappointed in the outcome, we intend to use it to improve and grow for tomorrow."
The RedHawks, picked to finish first in the Mid-American Conference coaches' preseason poll, jumped on the scoreboard first, landing a pair of shots in the back of the cage by the 25:11 mark of the first half. Northwestern clawed back as sophomore Alison Bullock (Boyds, Md./Stone Ridge) put the 'Cats on the board two minutes later on a penalty corner that was deflected from the top of the right post. Senior Christina Foley (Cape Elizabeth, Maine/Cape Elizabeth) and sophomore Jill Putnam (Greenfield, Mass./Greenfield) were credited with assists on the play. It was Bullock's first goal of her career.
Miami (Ohio) added another goal in the second half to secure the win.
NU netminder Emily Kyle (San Francisco, Calif./San Francisco University HS) recorded eight saves.
Northwestern returns to the field on Sunday, Aug. 27 when it travels to Ball State for a noon CT match.
