EVANSTON, Ill.-- Northwestern battled Marquette to a 0-0 tie this morning in its exhibition opener at Valley Fields on the campus of Marquette University in Milwaukee, Wis. The game was played as four 30-minute periods instead of the regular two 45-minute half format.

The Wildcats took 10 shots on the day, two by senior Gerardo Alvarez. NU showered the Marquette goalkeepers with eight shots on goal, but weren't able to get one in the net. MU's Matt Blouin and Nathan Sabich were the only two players to take shots for the Golden Eagles.

"We accomplished what we set out to today," head coach Tim Lenahan said. "We were looking to be organized on the defensive side of the ball and to establish a work ethic and team-first mentality. I think we did all three things. We have not begun to work on the attacking side of the ball and both teams today had heavy legs from the first three days of preseason. All in all, it was a solid first exhibition match for us against a quality team."

Keepers Will Briley, Justin Pines, Rich Nassif and Misha Rosenthal all played 30 minutes each in goal with Nassif and Rosenthal each recording one save.

Northwestern is back in action next Tuesday, August 18 when they take on Lafayette in Richland, N.J. They will then face Rutgers in Pomona, N.J. in its final exhibition match of the season.
