Wildcats Start NCAA Regional Play Thursday

EVANSTON, Ill. -- For the sixth time in seven years, the Northwestern women's golf team will participate in the NCAA Division I Women's Golf Championships. The Wildcats head to Bryan, Texas, Thursday through Saturday for the Central Regional Championships. Texas A&M University is hosting the 54-hole event at the Traditions Golf Club.
Northwestern, which does not have any seniors on its 2005-06 roster, garnered the No. 16 seed in the Central Regional. The 'Cats are ranked No. 48 in the Golfweek/Sagarin index and No. 51 according to Golfstat.
Northwestern is one of 63 teams in the Championships' field. Teams are spread across three 21-team regional tournaments: East, Central and West. All three regionals are scheduled to be played May 11-13.
The top eight teams and the top two individuals (not on one of those eight teams) from each region will advance to the NCAA Championships, which will be held May 23-26 at Ohio State's Scarlet Course in Columbus, Ohio. NU last advanced to the NCAA Championships in 2000.
The Wildcats are led by Alice Kim (Los Angeles, Calif./Brentwood). In her last outing, Kim became the first women's golfer in Northwestern history to clam a Big Ten Conference individual title. The junior, who set the league's 36-hole record (4-under 140) Friday, April 28 and equaled the 54-hole record Saturday, carded a 5-over 77 to finish with a 3-over 291 (68-72-74-77) at the IU Golf Course in Bloomington, Ind.
Northwestern finished fifth at the Big Ten Championships.
Teams are scheduled to play 18 holes each of the three days. Play commences at 7:30 a.m. (CDT) each morning.
NU begins competition on Thursday at 11:50 a.m. The 'Cats' second-round tee times on Friday start at 7:30 a.m.
Third-round tee times and pairings will be determined by team scores. The teams with the lowest scores will have the earliest tee times. The team that is 21st in the standings will be the last to tee off at 1:20 p.m.
