EVANSTON, Ill. - After exploding for 12 runs on 13 hits in game one of Saturday's doubleheader, Northwestern fell in second game 3-2. The Wildcats scored runs in the first and sixth innings, falling to 8-17 overall, 5-2 in the Big Ten. Pitcher George Kontos was the tough-luck loser, throwing his second-straight complete game.
Like they did in game one, NU came out swinging and scored a single run in the bottom of the first inning. Anthony Wycklendt (Glendale, Wis./Nicolet) lifted a sacrifice fly to centerfield, scoring first baseman Pat McMahon (Mundelein, Ill./Carmel) from third. McMahon reached on a fielding error and went to third on a Dan Brauer (Wheaton, Ill./Wheaton-Warrenville South) single.
Indiana scored their first run in the third inning as a leadoff single came around to score on a two-out single to right field.
Indiana came right back in the fourth inning, scoring two runs on one hit. A leadoff walk and double came around to score on a groundout and wild pitch.
Wycklendt lined a one-out solo home run in the bottom of the sixth inning to make the score 3-2 in favor of IU. It was his second round-tripper of the season.
The Wildcats and Hoosiers wrap up their four-game series with a single nine-inning contest Monday at 3 p.m.
