Box Score

EVANSTON, Ill. - In the first game of Saturday's doubleheader versus Indiana, Northwestern scored early and often in a 12-1 win. NU set the tone early scoring four runs in the first inning and never looking back. Junior third baseman Caleb Fields was 3-for-3 at the plate with a trio of RBI. Left-hander Dan Brauer went the distance on the mound for the Wildcats, striking out seven and improving to 2-1 on the year. It was his second-straight complete game.

The Wildcats came out swinging in the first inning, sending nine hitters to the plate and scoring four runs on five hits. Left fielder Anthony Wycklendt (Glendale, Wis./Nicolet), right fielder Antonio Mule (Lodi, N.J./Lodi) and third baseman Caleb Fields (Oak Park, Ill./Fenwick) all tallied RBI in the inning. Fields knocked in a pair of runs with a single to centerfield.

NU tallied a pair of runs in the third inning, as a Geoff Dietz (Lake Zurich, Ill./Lake Zurich) fielder's choice scored Mule from third base. Center fielder Stanley Finch (Lubbock, Texas/Cooper) scored as the double-play throw attempt to first base was thrown away.

NU led 6-0 after three complete innings.

Northwestern did not stop there, scoring four more runs in the fourth inning and two more in the sixth of the seven-inning contest.

In the fourth, first baseman Pat McMahon (Mundelein, Ill./Carmel) and Mule both had RBI singles, while second baseman Jake Owens (Stevens Point, Wis./Pacelli) crossed the plate on another Hoosier throwing error. Fields capped the inning with his third RBI single of the game.

In the sixth inning, Jake Wilson (Palatine, Ill./Palatine), who replaced Fields at third base, had an RBI groundout, while Tony Vercelli (Wilmington, Ill./Wilmington) recorded an RBI single to right field.

On the mound for NU, Brauer improved to 2-0 in the Big Ten, pitching his second complete game of the season. He did not allow a runner to reach third base until the top of the seventh inning as a leadoff double came around to score. He limited the Indiana offense to five hits, two in the final inning.
