Box Score
EVANSTON, Ill. - All-American Kristen Kjellman led the Wildcats with five goals as No. 2 Northwestern (15-1) won its fifth in a row and 17th straight at home with a 19-10 win today over the Denver Pioneers (14-4) at a wet and rainy Lakeside field in Evanston, Ill.
For Kjellman, one of the top candidates for this year's Tewaaraton Trophy, it marked her 13th hat trick or better on the season and her 10th game with four or more goals.
Lindsey Munday, also a top finalist for the Tewaaraton, recorded five points with three goals and two assists while Aly Josephs finished with three goals to lead the Wildcat attack.
It was another offensive onslaught for the Wildcats who have now outscored their last five opponents by a combined score of 89-38, an average of more than 10 goals per outing.
NU jumped out to a 3-0 lead with unassisted goals from Munday, Sarah Albrecht and Lynda McCandlish to start the game. After Denver's Steph Coyne got the Pioneers on the board 10 minutes into the game, the Wildcats scored three of the next four goals, two from Kjellman and one from Josephs, to take a 7-3 lead. Munday, Hilary Bowen and Kjellman all scored one more before the halftime horn to take a 9-4 lead at the break.
Despite six goals by Denver's Tanya Fuchs, the Pioneers received little help from its other attackers as only one other player, Karen Morton, had more than one goal on the afternoon. A total of 10 Wildcats found the back of the net to four for Denver.
The Pioneers kept digging, however, after back-to-back goals by Morton and Stephanie Greenlees cut NU's lead to 14-8 with 8:41 left. But the Wildcats, led by two additional goals by Kjellman, scored five of the last seven goals to put the game out of reach.
Kjellman had a game-high seven draw controls while Bowen finished with a game-high six ground balls.
Laura Glassanos finished with two goals while Bowen and Meredith Frank each had one goal and two assists to their credit. Albrecht finished with one goal and one assist while Hannah Nielsen and Kristen Boege rounded out the NU offensive with one goal each.
True-freshman Morgan Lathrop played all 60 minutes in goal and improved to 13-1 on the year.
The Wildcats, who clinched at least a share of their third straight ALC crown and a trip to the NCAA Tournament Friday night, can win the conference outright with a win this Friday (May 5) vs. Vanderbilt. Game time is 4 p.m. CT at Lakeside Field.
Game Notes: After being held to a season-low 10 goals at Duke on April 7, NU has now scored 89 goals over their last five games ... NU is 49-2 in its last 51 regular-season games ... NU won for the 17th straight time at home, five away from the record of 22 held by Maryland.
