Wildcats Fall To Buckeyes in Regular-Season Finale, 7-0

COLUMBUS, Ohio -- Northwestern's men's tennis team dropped the doubles point and was swept in singles play in a 7-0 loss versus No. 7 Ohio State Saturday at the Stickney Tennis Center in its regular-season finale. The Wildcats finish the regular season with an 11-10 record, including a 5-5 mark in the Big Ten.

Ohio State began the match by taking all three doubles matches.

At the No. 1 position, Adam Schaechterle (Oconomowoc, Wis./Kettle Moraine) and Matt Christian (Troy, Mich./Brother Rice) fell just short to the Buckeyes' top-ranked tandem of Scott Green and Ross Wilson. After the two teams played to a tiebreak, the Buckeyes edged the 'Cats in the breaker 8-6. They won the match 8-7 (6).

At No. 2, Chris Klingemann and Devin Mullings beat Christian Tempke (Wentorf, Germany/Gymnasium Lohbrügge) and Willy Lock (Lima, Peru/Markham College) 8-5, while Juan Gomez (Mexico City, Mexico/South Florida) and Marc Dwyer (Peachtree City, Ga./University of Nebraska-Independent Study H.S.) fell to Drew Eberly and Bryan Koniecko 8-4 at the No. 3 spot.

The Buckeyes' doubles success translated into singles wins as well, as Ohio State promptly won all six singles matches.

OSU's 103rd-ranked Chris Klingemann took a win at No. 1 singles as he beat No. 67 Tempke 6-1, 6-1.

The 38th-ranked Koniecko took a win over Lock at No. 2 singles. Lock took the first set easily, but Koniecko came back to win the final two sets and take the match 1-6, 6-2, 6-3.

No. 108 Mullings topped Gomez 6-0, 7-6 at No. 3 singles, while Dwyer fell to Dennis Mertens 6-2, 6-2 at No. 4.

No. 110 Moneke took a win over Schaechterle 6-2, 6-3 at the No. 5 spot while Wilson topped Evstratenkov 6-2, 6-1 at No. 6.

The Wildcats return to action at the Big Ten Championships Thursday through Sunday, April 27-30 at the University of Minnesota.
