EVANSTON, Ill. -- Junior Garland Cooper (Mission Viejo, Calif./Santa Margarita Catholic) has been invited to USA Softball's selection camp for the 2006 World University Games. She is one of 27 participants chosen for the camp.
The camp takes place June 9-11 at the Olympic Training Center in Chula Vista, Calif. It will be immediately followed by the Women's National Team camp June 13-17. Cooper is one of three Big Ten student-athletes to be invited to the camp, and the first NU softballer invited since Carri Leto was invited to the National Team camp in 2003.
Cooper, the reigning Big Ten Player of the Year, currently leads Northwestern with a .395 batting average and a school-record 18 doubles. She already holds Northwestern's career records for doubles, RBIs and total bases in just her third season with the program, while ranking 11th on the Big Ten's career home run list.
She has won three of the last six Big Ten Player of the Week honors, and her current career slugging percentage of .735 would rank her 10th in the history of Division I softball. Cooper won the USA Softball National Player of the Week nod on April 4 of this year.
