EVANSTON, Ill. - Top-ranked Northwestern outscored Connecticut 12-4 in the second half en route to a 16-8 win today over the Huskies in Storrs, Conn. Laura Glassanos (Sr., Hingham, Mass./Thayer Academy) scored four second half goals and added three assists as the Wildcats improved to 10-0 and won their 31st straight game. The loss drops UConn to 2-6.
Glassanos, one of four Tewaaraton Award finalists on the Wildcat roster, keyed an 11-1 scoring run in the second half after the game was tied 4-4 at the break. She scored two straight goals in less than a minute to put NU out in front 8-6 then added two late goals assisted on two more. Aly Josephs (Jr., Reiterstown, Md./Franklin), who finished with five points, scored all three of her goals during the decisive run.
Josephs found Kristen Kjellman (Jr., Westwood, Mass./Westwood) for the first goal of the second half, just 15 seconds in, to put NU back out in front 5-4. But UConn responded with two straight goals by Kristin Link and Shannon Burke to take 6-5 lead with 26:51 left.
Then in the blink of an eye (11 seconds later to be exact) freshman Hannah Nielsen's (Adelaide, Australia/Brighton Secondary) unassisted goal sparked the 11-1 run over the next 25 minutes. After two straight goals by Glassanos, UConn answered with an unassisted goal by Michele Whitney to make it 8-7.
But it wasn't a contest from that point as Nielsen assisted a Meredith Frank (Fr., Westwood, Mass./Westwood) goal that served as the first of eight-consecutive goals to put the game out of reach. The Wildcat defense held UConn scoreless over a 19:22 span.
Northwestern won the draw controls by a count of 13-4 in the second period. They outshot the Huskies 36-21 overall.
Hilary Bowen (Fr., Rochester, N.Y./Brighton) and Frank finished with two goals each while Nielsen had one with two assists. Lindsey Munday (Sr., Mountain Lakes, N.J./Mountain Lakes) and Lindsay Finocchiaro (Fairfield, N.J./West Essex) each had one goal to round out the scoring.
Link and Whitney each had two goals for UConn.
Morgan Lathrop (Briarcliff, N.Y./The Hackley School) had six saves between the pipes as she improved her record to 9-0 on the year. Kristen Haldeman had 13 saves for the Huskies.
The win sets up the much-anticipated showdown with No. 2 Duke next Friday, April 7 in Durham, N.C. Game time is 6 p.m. CT.
