EVANSTON, Ill. - Robert Morris scored nine runs in the second inning on their way to a 14-8 win over Northwestern Tuesday afternoon at Rocky Miller Park. The first nine Eagle hitters to go to the plate in the second all reached base via the hit and all nine scored. The Wildcats scored two in the third inning, single runs in the fourth and fifth, and four more in the sixth, but could not overcome the deficit. NU fell to 9-18 overall.
Starter Andrew Smith (Fort Mitchell, Ky./Beechwood) had one of those days no pitcher likes to experience. He lasted just one inning, gave up six runs and took the loss, falling to 2-5 on the season.
In all, Northwestern used a total of six pitchers. Only freshmen Mike Folan (Arlington Heights, Ill./St. Viator) and Brian Morgan (Eden Prairie, Minn./Benilde-St. Margaret's) did not give up runs.
Offensively, the Wildcats had 12 hits, compared to 21 for Robert Morris. NU was led by shortstop Tommy Finn (Valparaiso, Ind./Andrean) who ended his day 2-for-3 with an RBI and a run scored. Second baseman Jake Owens (Stevens Point, Wis./Pacelli) was 1-for-1 with an RBI and three runs scored after being walked three times in the game. Freshman Jake Wilson (Palatine, Ill./Palatine) was 2-for-5 making his fourth start of the season at third base.
NU is next in action when they head downstate to take on the University of Illinois in a four-game series set to begin at 6 p.m. Friday night.
