Wildcats Lose to Valparaiso 7-3 Tuesday Afternoon

EVANSTON, Ill. - Northwestern's baseball team lost its midweek contest to Valparaiso 7-3 Tuesday afternoon at Rocky Miller Park in Evanston. The Crusaders jumped out to a 2-0 first-inning lead and never looked back, dropping the Wildcats to 12-20 overall. Sophomore Antonio Mule was 1-for-4 with a pair of RBI.
Valpo put up a pair of first-inning runs off Wildcat starter Chris Davidson (Huntington Woods, Mich./Berkley). A pair of singles were aided by a base-on-balls in the inning.
The Crusaders extended their lead to 3-0 in the fourth inning when a two-out double scored a runner from first.
A two-run home run off Wildcat reliever Ryan Myers (Lake Villa, Ill./Carmel) and an RBI single made the score 6-0 in favor of Valparaiso in the top of the sixth inning.
NU answered with two runs in the bottom of the sixth inning on Mule's two-RBI double down the left-field line. Shortstop Tommy Finn (Valparaiso, Ind./Andrean) and second baseman Jake Owens (Stevens Point, Wis./Pacelli) scored on the play. Finn reached on an error and Owens singled.
Valpo scored a single run in the seventh inning on an RBI single off freshman reliever Eric Binder (Burr Ridge, Ill./Hinsdale Central).
First baseman Rob Campbell's (Bloomfield, Mich./Andover) RBI-groundout to shortstop in the bottom of the eighth inning ended the scoring for both teams.
Junior Andrew Smith (Fort Mitchell, Ky./Beechwood) and freshman Brian Morgan (Eden Prarie, Minn./Benilde-St. Margaret's) each pitched one scoreless inning.
NU is next in action this weekend when they host Big Ten rival Penn State at Rocky Miller Park. Game one of the four-game series begins at 3 p.m. Friday afternoon.
