CLEVELAND, Ohio - With NCAA Championships bids on the line at the Regionals over the weekend at Cleveland State, a number of Wildcats made strong cases to advance to college fencing's highest stage. Sam Nemecek (Caledonia, Mich./Caledonia) not only qualified for NCAAs, she finished first in foil, leaving no doubt she belongs at the National Championship.

Also in foil, Jessica Florendo (Forest Hills, N.Y./The Dwight School) finished third and Christine Wang (Milpitas, Calif./Castilleja) was fourth. Florendo qualifies for NCAAs, while Wang misses because any single team is allowed just two representatives in each weapon. So, because Nemecek and Florendo are in, Wang is out. Natalie Wang (Milpitas, Calif./Presentation) finished in sixth position.

In epee, Sharon Sullivan (Fairport, N.Y./Fairport) finished fourth to qualify for the season-ending tournament. Courtney DuBois (Chatham, N.J./Oak Knoll) finished eighth, Sara Pecherek (Park Ridge, Ill./Maine South) ninth and Megan Ross (Pittsburgh, Pa./Fox Chapel Area) 13th.

In sabre, Emily Pasternak (Wilmette, Ill./New Trier) and Mai Vu (New York, N.Y./Bronx Science) finished seventh and eighth. But, because Ohio State has three fencers who finished ahead of them, they each move up a spot for an at-large berth. Pasternak and Vu will have to wait until Tuesday, March 7 to find out if they make the NCAAs.
