RIO VERDE, Ariz. -- Northwestern entered this week's Rio Verde Collegiate Invitational as the highest-ranked team in the 17-team field. The Wildcats, ranked 45th, made that rating stand up, leading from start to finish and win their second tournament title in as many years.
Northwestern, which began the final round with a 10-stroke advantage over Michigan, stretched that lead to 18 strokes after carding a final-round-best 8-over 292 on Saturday. The Wildcats finished with a 37-over 889 (302-295-292). The Wildcats' 54-hole score of 889 was the best in the tourney's four-year history. Michigan finished second and Arkansas-Little Rock third.
Sophomore Brittany Johnston (Akron, Ohio/Walsh Jesuit) was threatening to win her first college tournament, but finished second, three strokes behind Michigan's Amy Schmucker. Johnston was 5-over for the tournament (76-69-73=218).
Freshman Jennifer Hong (Windermere, Fla./The First Academy) finished in a two-tie for third place with a 9-over 222 (75-74-73). Junior Alice Kim (Los Angeles, Calif./Brentwood) was the third Northwestern player finishing in the top-10, in seventh place at 12-over (75-76-74=225).
Junior Heather Scholten (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian) moved up to 12th place after carding a 2-over 73 on Saturday. She finished at 14-over (78-76-73=227). Junior Kelly Robb (Concord, Mass./Middlesex) also shot a 2-over 73 and finished 23rd (18-over 231) while sophomore Katie Trachok (Pittsburgh, Pa./Upper St. Clair) finished 27th with a 19-over 232.
Northwestern won last March's Mountain View Collegiate Invitational, which was also held in Arizona.
