Box Score

LEXINGTON, Ky. - Northwestern out-hit Kentucky 13-10 Saturday afternoon, but UK scored runs in every inning but the first and won 12-7. Offensively, Jake Owens (Stevens Point, Wis./Pacelli) and Antonio Mule (Lodi, N.J./Lodi) each went 4-for-5 with two RBI at the plate. Owens also scored four runs. The loss drops the Wildcats to 3-7 on the season.

Northwestern jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning as each of the first four hitters in the lineup singled. Mule and designated hitter Pat McMahon (Mundelein, Ill./Carmel) each tallied an RBI.

NU starter Dan Brauer (Wheaton, Ill./Wheaton-Warrenville South) escaped the first inning with a strikeout, despite walking the bases loaded.

Following the first inning, Kentucky scored in each of the next seven innings, including three runs in the fifth inning. Northwestern used a total of six pitchers in the game.

Brauer lasted four innings in his shortest outing of the season. Kentucky native Andrew Smith (Fort Mitchell, Ky./Beechwood) came on in relief to start the fifth inning with the score tied 4-4. Smith did not record an out and gave up three runs on one hit, which was a two-run home run.

NU tied the game in the top half of the fourth inning when Owens laced a two-out triple to the right-centerfield wall. Owens' triple plated Aaron Newman (Palatine, Ill./Palatine) who reached first after being hit by a pitch. Mule lined the very next pitch to centerfield, scoring Owens.

Senior right-hander Julio Siberio (Davie, Fla./St. Thomas Aquinas) took over for Smith in the bottom half of the fifth inning and induced a sacrifice bunt and a fly ball for the first two outs of the inning. A strikeout ended the UK threat. Siberio pitched two complete innings, giving up two runs on two hits.

In the sixth, left-fielder Anthony Wycklendt (Glendale, Wis./Nicolet) drove in Caleb Fields (Oak Park, Ill./Fenwick) from second with a single through the left side. Fields singled to third and advanced to second on a slow grounder to first base.

Wycklendt's RBI single made the score 7-5 in favor of Kentucky after five and one-half innings.

Freshman Mike Folan (Arlington Heights, Ill./St. Viator) pitched the seventh inning and gave up one run on two hits.

Classmate Brian Morgan (Eden Prairie, Minn./Benilde-St. Margaret's) started the bottom of the eighth inning, but ran into trouble. With one out and two runs already in, senior Chris Davidson (Huntington Woods, Mich./Berkley) finished the game with a one-pitch double play.

In the ninth, Owens tattooed a Kentucky offering over the centerfield fence for his first home run of his collegiate career. On the day, Owens has four hits, scored four runs and recorded two RBI.

Mule was just as impressive. The New Jersey native had four hits and drove in two. Mule leads the team with a .425 average, starting all 10 games. Owens is a close second with a .422 batting average.

The two teams wrap up the three-game series with a single, nine-inning contest at 1 p.m. (ET) tomorrow.
