ANN ARBOR, Mich. – Northwestern dropped its Saturday contest at Michigan, 8-3 at Ray Fisher Stadium.
OF Logan de Groot notched a career-high four hits in four at-bats with a double in the contest, matching the most hits by a Wildcat in a game this season.
First-year INF Jake Yang went 2-for-3 with a walk and a run, making the start at designated hitter.
Michigan (23-15, 9-8 Big Ten) grabbed an early lead, scoring five runs, three earned, in the bottom of the first.
INF Owen McElfatrick got Northwestern (14-20-1, 5-12 Big Ten) on the board on an RBI single, scoring C Shane Hofstadler in the top of the third.
The Wolverines added two more unearned runs in the fifth and another run in the seventh to stretch their lead to 8-1.
Sacrifice flies by INF Jack Counsell and INF Noah Ruiz trimmed Michigan's lead to five and capped off the scoring.
RHP Matt Kouser (1-4) surrendered seven runs, three earned, in 5.0 innings pitched, striking out four and walking four.
The weekend series wraps up on Sunday morning at 10 a.m. CT on BTN.
