HOUSTON, Texas - After day two at the 2006 Fencing Championships, the women's saber, foil and epée are complete and Penn State leads the team standings. Northwestern finished its season with a seventh place showing at the annual event. Junior Jessica Florendo was NU's top finisher, placing fifth in the foil division.

Northwestern finished the Championships with 56 total points, 37 behind women's champion Penn State. The National Championship is determined by the total points scored by both the men's and women's teams.

NU placed eighth in 2005 with 50 points.

The Wildcats' top finisher, Florendo, placed fifth in the foil, while freshman Sam Nemecek placed eighth. Florendo scored 16 of NU's 56 points. Nemecek tallied 14. Erzsebet Garay from St. John's took home the gold medal with 21 total points.

In epee, senior Sharon Sullivan placed 13th with 11 victories. She was NU's lone competitor in that division. Katarzyna Trzopek of Penn State won the gold.

In sabre, Emily Pasternak placed 16th, totaling 8 victories, while Mai Vu was 18th. Vu ended the championships with seven victories.Mariel Zagunis of Notre Dame won the gold.
