Wildcats Seventh After Day One of Women's Fencing Championship

HOUSTON, Texas - Northwestern's women's fencing team seventh after Day One of NCAA Fencing Championships. With five fencers at the Championship--teams can have a maximum of six--NU will try to crack the top-5 with a strong finish on the final day.
Freshman Sam Nemecek (Caledonia, Mich./Caledonia) if fifth in the foil division with 10 victories (out of 14) after the first day of competition. Fellow foilist, Jessica Florendo (Forest Hills, N.Y./The Dwight School), is in eighth place with eight victories.
In epée, senior Sharon Sullivan (Fairport, N.Y./Faiport) ranks 15th with six victories. Sullivan is NU's lone NCAA epée qualifier.
In sabre, senior Emily Pasternak (Wilmette, Ill./New Trier) is 16th and junior Mai Vu (New York, N.Y./Bronx Science) is 17th. They each have four victories.
Penn State leads the women's division with 59 points. NU is seventh with 32.
