EVANSTON, Ill. -- Northwestern head coach Tim Lenahan announced the signing of four student-athletes to National Letters of Intent who will join the Wildcats for the 2006 season. The class includes two NSCAA All-Americans and an NSCAA Regional All-American and is comprised of two defenders, a midfielder and a forward from three states. This class includes the Ohio Player of the Year and Delaware Player of the Year, respectively.
First on the list is Mark Blades (Lakewood, Ohio/St. Ignatius), a 5-foot-7-inch, 150-pound defender who is considered one of the top recruits in the nation. An NSCAA All-American, Blades led his high school team to a 42-2-2 record and two state championships in three years as a starter. He tallied 17 goals and 41 assists during his high school career and was the 2005 Ohio Player of the Year.
Fellow Ohio native Pat Coleman (Chagrin Falls, Ohio/Chagrin Falls) is an NSCAA Regional All-American defender who will join the Wildcat backline in the fall. Coleman was named All-State and Chagrin Valley Conference Most Valuable Player in 2005 and was a three-time All-CVC first team member. He led his team to an Ohio Division II state championship appearance in 2003 while playing sweeper and was a four-time Ohio North State Team member. In club play, he led the Cleveland Internationals club team to four-consecutive Ohio North State Cup Championships.
Eamon O'Neill (Wilmington, Del./Salesianum) is a two-time NSCAA All-American who was one of the most sought after recruits in the country. O'Neill led his high school team to three state championships in three years as a starter and a perfect 40-0-0 record his junior and senior seasons, helping them reach a No. 8 national ranking. He recorded 69 goals and 64 assists in high school and was twice invited to the Adidas ESP--an invitation granted to only the top-150 high school players in the nation.
Forward Kevin Valenta (St. Louis, Mo./St. John Vianney H.S.) is a 2005 first team all-state selection who took his team to a state championship appearance as a captain. He was a three-year starter, two-time first team all-conference selection and two-time team Most Valuable Player. He led his club team to the US Club nationals in 2003 and followed that up with a state championship and Midwest League championship in 2004.
"This class really helps us to reload after the loss of 10 seniors last year and should keep us in the hunt for success in the Big Ten and national levels," Lenahan said. "We will have an additional release in April with the rest of what will be a very, very good class for Northwestern."
