No. 16 Northwestern Wins Big Versus Buckeyes, 31-6

EVANSTON, Ill. -- Northwestern's 16th-ranked wrestling team won eight of 10 matches to take a 31-6 win over Ohio State Friday at Welsh-Ryan Arena. The Wildcats notched three wins to open the match, then won five of the last six matches for the victory.
The match opened with the 125-pound weight class, where senior John Velez (Kings Mills, Ohio/Kings) won by forfeit, giving Northwestern an easy 6-0 lead to start the match.
At 133 lbs., Northwestern's Daniel Quintela (St. Paul, Minn./Highland Park) dominated Ohio State's Anner Arroyo throughout the match. Quintela scored two quick points on a takedown to start the match, then tallied four more to take a 6-2 lead into the second period. The two went back in forth in the second period, but Quintela still held an 8-3 advantage heading into the final round. After two more takedowns, Quintela walked off with the 13-3 win with riding time, giving Northwestern a 10-0 lead.
At 141 lbs., sixth-ranked Ryan Lang (North Royalton, Ohio/St. Edward) took the mat for the 'Cats, facing the Buckeyes' T.J. Enright. Lang notched an early takedown to take a 2-0 lead, but Enright tallied escapes in the first and second periods to tie the score at 3-3 heading into the third round. There, Lang took a 3-2 lead after an escape midway through the period. Lang earned one more takedown as time expired take the 5-2 decision.
After Marty Gould's (Lincolnwood, Ill./Niles West) setback at 149 lbs., Greg Hagel (Linwood, N.J./Blair Academy) notched a comeback win for Northwestern at 157 lbs. The Buckeyes' Steve Sommer got on the board first with a takedown, but Hagel responded with a reversal one minute into the match to tie the score at 2-2. The two remained tied until Hagel was awarded a takedown 48 seconds into the third round. Hagel outlasted Sommer for the remainder of the match for the 4-2 win.
With Northwestern cruising, No. 18 Will Durkee (Pittsburgh, Pa./Shady Side Academy) faced Ohio State's Nathaniel Augustson at 165 lbs. Durkee took a 2-0 lead after hooking Auguston's left leg and taking him down with 26 seconds remaining in the first period. Durkee scored on a reversal midway through the second period and entered the final round with a 4-0 lead. Durkee never allowed Augustson to even come close to a comeback and took the match 5-0 with riding time.
With Northwestern leading 22-3, sophomore All-American Jake Herbert (Wexford, Pa./North Allegheny) took the match for the 'Cats and dominated from beginning to end.
Herbert notched his first takedown not even 30 seconds into the match versus OSU's 19th-ranked Blake Maurer. Herbert earned one more takedown in the first and ended the first period with over two minutes of riding time.
Holding onto a 4-1 lead, Herbert started the second period down, but quickly got to his feet for the escape. With riding time, Herbert went on to a 6-1 win, his 30th-consecutive victory.
Eleventh-ranked Mike Tamillow (Oak Park, Ill./Fenwick) came close, but fell to OSU's Alex Picazo. After tallying an early takedown, Tamillow ended the first period with a 2-1 lead. He extended his lead to 3-1 by earning an escape to begin the second, but Picazo came back with a third-period escape to make the score 3-2. With under 20 seconds remaining, Picazo tallied a takedown and three-point nearfall to edge Tamillow 7-3.
With Northwestern still comfortably in the lead, No. 12 Matt Delguyd (Mayfield Heights, Ohio/Mayfield) notched his 100th-career win versus Ohio State's Corey Morrison at 197 lbs. After a scoreless first period, Delguyd tallied an escape seven seconds into the second period to take a 1-0 lead. Just moments later Delguyd took a 3-0 lead after he tallied a takedown at match's edge, but Morrison responded with an escape to make the score 3-1.
Morrison cut Delguyd's lead to one by earning an escape with 1:15 left in the third, but Delguyd responded by slamming Morrison to the mat for a takedown, increasing his lead to 5-2. Delguyd rode Morrison for the remainder of the match and came away with a 6-2 victory due to 1:59 of riding time.
In the final match of the day, Dustin Fox (Galion, Ohio/Galion) faced No. 20 Kirk Nail. Fox notched a double-leg takedown midway through the first period to take a 2-0 lead. Nail earned an escape to make the score 2-1, then tallied an escape to begin the second period to tie the score at 2-2.
Fox took a 3-2 lead after opening the final round with an escape and held onto the lead until the end.
With the win, Northwestern improves to 7-4 overall, 2-2 in the Big Ten. The 'Cats return to action at 1 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 5 versus No. 3 Illinois at Rolling Meadows High School.
